Contempo Cafe Menu Updates: Tofu Grain Bowl Review

Contempo Cafe Tofu Grain and vegetable Bowl

Contempo Cafe in Disney’s Contemporary Resort has brought us a new vegan option, the Tofu Grain and Vegetable Bowl. As of now, this new vegan option is in addition to the existing Kale Power Greens Salad. They took the peppers and onions from the “Signature Rice Bowls” they now have on the menu, but added sweet potatoes, black beans, salsa Verde, Pico de Gallo, and replaced the rice with quinoa.

This combination of flavors did NOT hit for me. The sweet potatoes and quinoa really take you out of the southwestern flavors they seemed to be going for, and the tofu seasoning seemed to have lime flavor but also was sweet?? And there was a surprise giant blob of warm sour cream in the bottom, which totally freaked me out because it’s not listed on the menu description at all. It IS vegan sour cream (Follow Your Heart brand), but that did not salvage this dish for me.

The Tofu Grain and Vegetable Bow was also supposed to come with guacamole on the side, which they forgot for us (and I also didn’t really see/taste Pico or salsa Verde??) but I don’t know that that would’ve helped either. It was just a one-note feel as far as textures go, and could’ve used a bit of crunch or even something fresh-tasting in there (the peppers and onions looked drained of all color). The warm sour cream just made the whole thing seem off.

I’m not sure why they didn’t make it easier for everyone and just let us add tofu to the rice bowls and leave the cheese off, which is kind of what we had 2 menus ago, except with crispy tofu. I appreciate Disney chefs trying to create new whole food vegan options, but sometimes I wonder if they taste them before adding them to the menu. Of course, this may be your new favorite and you may think I’m crazy for not loving it. Everyone’s tastebuds are different!

We’ll have a review for the new Banana Caramel Trifle that replaced the Peanut Butter Bar here in the Grab and Go dessert case soon, so check back!
