The Hollywood Brown Derby is a full-service, signature dining restaurant located on Hollywood Boulevard in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

When you step into the Brown Derby, you step into the “Golden Age” of Hollywood.

The walls are adorned with caricatures of famous faces, a tradition that began with the original restaurant from which Walt Disney World’s version was fashioned after.

Upon entering the dining room you are greeted with smartly dressed cast members serving guests seated at dark wood booths and tables with crisp white tablecloths.

The great part about the Hollywood Brown Derby is the lounge area, which is located outside, and usually available for walk-ups, and serves the same menu as inside the restaurant.

The restaurant has an extensive list of wine and craft cocktails along with beer and non alcoholic beverages.

The restaurant boasts a vegan as-is appetizer, entree and dessert, which we’ll review below!

Your meal will start with Complementary Bread Service. The sourdough rolls are vegan as-is, served warm, and heavenly. You’ll just need to ask your server to bring you Earth Balance butter. Ours was kind enough to sprinkle on some of the special salt that is given to guests who opt for dairy butter.

The appetizer option has also changed quite a bit, sometimes separately from the entree or dessert updates. Currently, the appetizer is house-made ravioli.

  • House-made Ravioli with English peas, carrot purée, and pickled alba mushrooms – $15

I finally got to try this appetizer at my recent visit with Melissa from VeganDisneyWorld. This dish, while very spring-like in its flavors and ingredients, is still hearty and satisfying to be a perfect option on its own if you want a quick stop at the lounge for a bite and dessert. The ravioli are chewy with a fresh pasta texture, and the filling is a light, lemony, and creamy plant-based ricotta. The carrot puree is light and sweet, the mushrooms are vinegary, and the fresh peas are the perfect complement to the flavors and textures.

The entree has been the plant-based Shepherd’s Pie for a bit, and I have had it previously. As with any entree at Walt Disney World, there are subtle updates to the plating. When I had the dish in I believe April, there was no cauliflower, and that has now been added to the plate. The same basic pie is there and the flavors as well. They recently changed the name on the app and online menus, but it’s still listed as Shepherd’s Pie on the physical menu.

  • Vegetable Lentil Pie – Merlot-braised Black Lentil, Truffled Mashed Potato, Glazed Root Vegetables – $33.00

I LOVE a good Shepherd’s pie, and the black lentils are a perfect replacement for meat. The peas and other vegetables add to the flavors and textures and really make it a filling option. The roasted cauliflower and Romanesco were perfectly cooked to my palate. There is also a turnip puree with truffle, which adds to the satisfying flavors of the dish.

As mentioned, we did hear that this menu will update in the spring, so we’ll be sure to head back and try whatever the new options are!

For dessert you’ll want to order the Orange-Hazelnut Chocolate Cake – $13 which remains the vegan and gluten-free option. The previous chocolate cake was delicious, but this is next level. The cake itself is rich, moist and chocolatey, while the mousse layers are sweet and light. There are ground hazelnuts sprinkled on top, which are a delightful texture to crunch, along with the candied orange peel. The orange panna cotta is a strange texture, very firm and not jiggly, but mixed with the cake flavors it’s a nice chocolate-orange mix. The cookie crumbs are another sweet and crunchy texture, and obviously, the presentation is fantastic.

We definitely don’t take for granted when we are offered a beautifully presented and delicious vegan option, so major kudos to the Brown Derby chefs for taking the time, care, and effort to knock this out of the park.
